6 of the Best One-bed Flats on Houzz

Looking for design ideas for your small flat? Browse these smart schemes for inspiration

City living has many benefits, but generous floor space isn't usually one of them. However, with a few ingenious design tricks, small rooms can be made to look and feel much bigger. So if you have a petite urban flat and want to make the very most it, be inspired by these clever homes on Houzz.

Elegance and style in a city centre apartment
This elegant little flat in central London feels calm and sophisticated thanks to a rich and inviting colour palette and a raft of clever design tricks that make it seem larger than it actually is. From antique-bronze mirrored walls that fool the eye to the elegant sofa-bed that allows the living room to become a second bedroom, the design details make it feel cosy and inviting, but never cramped.

In addition, the designers have focused on luxurious décor, such as the gold-latticed radiator panels and the petite-sized dining table in rich walnut, to create a little jewel box of a home that reflects the grandeur of the views outside.

Smart layout tweaks in a small space
This clever apartment in Paris is a masterclass in small-space living. The owners have transformed it from a tiny studio into a one-bedroom home by adding half-glazed internal walls to carve out a separate bedroom within the main living area.

By keeping the décor fresh and bright throughout, the rooms feel light and clean, and the addition of a glazed door between the bedroom and living room allows more light to filter through from the front to the back of the space.

Clever zoning in a converted studio
This neat apartment on the outskirts of Moscow demonstrates a similarly clever approach to working with a studio floorplan. Here, glazed partition walls have been used to create a bedroom that also integrates hallway storage.

Mirrored floor-to-ceiling cupboard doors work brilliantly to make the narrow hallway feel more airy, while pale flooring throughout ensures the space feels cohesive.

In the hallway and kitchen, the walls are crisp white, but by using strong colour and pattern in the bedroom and behind the sofa, the designers have ensured these two spaces feel visually separate enough to allow for unwinding and relaxing.

Light and space in a ground-floor flat
An internal lightwell, a bedroom in a glazed box, and a clever new layout are just three of the features that make this small basement flat so special.

When designers Sebastian Camisuli and Ana Martins first saw the property in north London's Kentish Town, it had what Sebastian describes as a 'back-to-front' layout.

"The living room and kitchen were in the front, with a bedroom to the back and a corridor on the side leading to the garden," Sebastian explains. "It was a bad 1970s project, but the owners – who had just bought it – saw potential and got us involved." The new layout brings light and space to this little home.

Organisation and clutter-free living in a rooftop apartment
Storage is the key to success in this characterful one-bed flat in London. From bespoke coat cupboards to a walk-in wardrobe, every inch of wall space works hard to create the luxury of uncluttered floor space in the main living area.

"The only way to make a small flat look tidy is for everything to have a place," designer Ebba Thott says.

On creating bespoke storage cupboards in the hallway, she adds, "We played with the perception of depth – the cupboards are only 37cm deep. They look bigger than that, but you don't need a 60cm-deep cabinet for efficient storage, you just have to be clever with the hanging systems you add."
